Learn the ins and outs of the international Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and take your dialect practice to the next level!
If you’ve ever consulted a text on performing dialects, it’s very likely you’ve seen the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) with all of its foreign-looking symbols clearly put on the page to impede your progress. Why do dialect coaches use such a complicated system to describe sound?
Fortunately for you, the IPA is actually a highly logical and reliable system for accurately recording the sounds of speech- and it can be learned quickly with the right kind of study.
This five-week intensive is designed for those who have an interest in going deeper into the craft of dialect modification and acquisition by establishing some basic understanding of the tools of the trade. Students will learn speech anatomy and musculature, placement and action of speech sounds, how to transcribe sound into symbols, and how to leverage your newfound knowledge of the IPA to perform a dialect of the classes choosing. Emphasis is put on using the resources available to you rather than memorizing symbols and sounds.
Class is limited to 10 students. Financial assistance may be available, please e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org to inquire about scholarship and work study availability.
Mondays October 19 - November 16, 6:00 - 8:00 PM
